I see that you have that as a future possibility, so I just thought I'd add a comment to support it.

I've been a little slack in updating the online "to do" list over Christmas. This has actually been moved up as a before-release thing, as I have had a good idea about how to implement it. It will probably make it into the beta in about two or three versions' time - 0.22b or 0.23b. Thanks, Keith

How are you thinking of doing it, if you don't mind me asking?

You would select the documents in the outline view and ctrl-click and select "Rename and autonumber". This would bring up a panel or sheet in which you would specify the base name and choose whether numbers would prepend or append the base name. Then the selected documents would just be renamed sequentially as specified.
Right now, though, I am rethinking a lot about Scrivener, as I mentioned in another thread. I want to simplify it, and am looking at the best way of doing that...
Thanks, Keith

Ok. May I make a suggestion?
I was thinking of maybe a dialog box which you could add a variable to:
chapterNum - starts from - increment
Then if I put something in the title like:
Chapter <chapterNum> - The dark and stormy night
and then for the next chapter, I could have
Chapter <chapterNum> - The way home
Each time Scrivener sees <chapterNum> it replaces it with the next number in the sequence.
Chapter 1 - The dark and stormy night Chapter 2 - The way home
You could do this live, but that would mean recalculating all the numbers whenever a chapter was moved.
Or you could just do it when the story is printed or exported.
In what way?

It won't be quite so automatic, as that is too expensive. It does need a starting number, though, and some way of placing the number in the middle of the text if specified... Thanks, Keith

If you're streamlining the app, then forget the numbering for the time being.
It's easy enough to add chapter numbers with Word when I'm formatting the final draft.

Thanks - I was thinking the same thing. I think it should be more of a 2.0 thing. 1.0 should be about getting a stable app that is as good as it could be and that does not need any radical rethinking after release... Thanks, Keith
