Hi, As you probably know if you've looked at the "to do" list (or even if you've just looked at the current Scrivener application icon and thought that it really isn't up to scratch), at some point before release I need to design and create a much better application icon. This is the place to make suggestions. If anyone makes such a killer suggestion that I use it (or even sketches an example that I can steal), that will be a free copy of the app. Here are the ideas I have had so far: * A refined version of the current binder. Only, Scrivener is much more than just a ring binder. * Some sort of fancy S (one idea I had was turning the yin-yan sign into a cool S with a pencil through the middle). * Some sort of book; for instance, something like a Moleskine notebook. * Some mixture of tools - index cards, notebooks, pens (but that would be way too messy and indistinguishable in a small dock). * A typewriter - but I can't use that because Mellel already does. * A sphere with a symbol in it. Only, too many Mac icons do that. So, if anyone has any really cool ideas about how the Scrivener application icon should look, I would be very grateful. Many thanks, Keith

I'd vote for something simple, with very clean execution. I like the idea of somethinglike a Moleskine notebook. Simple and clean.

I don't know, a binder seems good to me. You can put all sorts of different things in a binder, after all, not just text!
Maybe putting your fancy S/yin-yang logo on the binder's cover?

AmberV
I liked the 'Fancy Ess' design.
I was thinking that the 'S' could be drawn by a quill or something.
But that might look to busy .. :-(

Thanks for suggestions so far, especially to AmberV for mocking up some ideas. AmberV, where did you get the "fancy" S? I _do_ like that... Thanks, Keith

Hi.
I also like AmberVĀ“s "fancy Ess". Another idea is a pencil or a quill that just finished drawing an "S".
Just my 2c, Franz

...AmberV, where did you get the "fancy" S? I _do_ like that... I downloaded the font from here: tinyurl.com/ch5u5The name of it is Broken Planewing, and it is a freeware font, so there should not be any problems with using it. In my opinion, before it was used for an icon, it would need to be converted to paths in something like Freehand, and touched up a bit.

It's a symbol intended for use on signage for public buildings. According to the website, www.designofsignage.com/application/symbol/index.html, "You are welcome to make use of these designs free of charge. To make it convenient for reproduction and printing, the symbols are available for downloading in eps file format. These copyright free symbols are designed by Ravi Poovaiah, Professor, IDC, IIT Bombay. You need not ask his permission to use these symbols. However, you are requested to acknowledge IIT Bombay whenever or wherever you make use of these symbols."

If you don't like my previous suggestion, how about a hand holding a pen - something like this:

And another suggestion - a macro view of some text, something like this:

Last one for now - a desk tidy:

Really my last post :-) This glass with lots of yellow pencils caught my eye. If I "borrowed" this as inspiration for an icon, I'd probably use a smooth glass or even a coloured mug.

Wow, thanks for all the suggestions, these are GREAT. I like the signage symbol (or something like it), though I think the disembodied hand would just scare me (as a kid I had nightmares for years after seeing The Hand, a film starring Michael Caine about a disembodied hand killing everybody). My favourite so far, however, is the yin-yan "S". It's far better than the yin-yan "s" that I had in mind, and it could well be a winner. AmberV, would you mind sending me the PSD file (or whatever format it is created in)? I would love to play with it. My PhotoShop skills are, frankly, not good enough to get the same quality of icon myself without hours or days of fiddling. I might like to try it as a sphere (to fit in with many other Mac symbols), but would probably be great just as it is... Thanks! Keith
